Aquí os paso lo que decía el Sr. Weinstein justo antes del crack de 2007-2008. No es de extrañar que le parezcan sectores muy malos el bancario, brokers y el sector retail (aciertos de lleno, especialmente el bancario y el de brokers). Los mejores según él, eran los metales preciosos, tecnología,  industriales y fertilizantes. De nuevo acertó con los metales, la tecnología y los fertilizantes. En el caso de los industriales falló, ya que a primeros de 2008, fueron liquidados de los primeros.

    En la parte del final recomienda cortos! y leer su libro sobre este aspecto, sin duda una gran recomendación. Aunque no era muy complicado ver lo que iba a ocurrir en la bolsa, Stan de nuevo se adelantó, que bueno es este Stan, si señor. PAUL KANGAS: My guest “market monitor” this week is Stan Weinstein, editor and publisher of “Global Trend Alert”, a financial advisory service for institutional investors. Stan, welcome back to NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT.

STAN WEINSTEIN, EDITOR & PUBLISHER, “GLOBAL TREND ALERT”: Always my pleasure to be back, Paul.

KANGAS: The Dow as we know, hit a record high just above the 14,000 level in July and promptly sold off rather badly. Was that sell-off within the range of a normal correction for a healthy bull market or are we beginning to see the bear market?

WEINSTEIN: I don’t want to get hung up in semantics because one person’s bear market is another person’s correction. What I feel very strongly about, Paul, very strongly, is that an important high was hit in the mid-July period and at least two-thirds will of the market is already in its own private bear market. So at best it’s neutral and we’re no longer in a healthy (INAUDIBLE) bull market.

KANGAS: What indicators warned you that the rally to the new high, all-time high was suspect?

WEINSTEIN: There were so many. Let’s just focus on the fact that the advance decline line hit its high all the way back in early June, on June 4 and then the Dow made a series of new highs thereafter, always unconfirmed. That’s a warning and also very mediocre new highs throughout July and the icing on the cake, one day after the Dow hit that high 14,000, there were more new lows than new highs, both on the New York and (INAUDIBLE) market. Not a good sign.

KANGAS: On your last visit with us in mid-November, when the Dow was at about 12,300, you warned that if it fell below 11,200 the market was in big trouble. It didn’t fall below that. Here we are at 13,400. Do you have a new Dow worry level?

WEINSTEIN: Here we go — my new level is 12,800. If at any point the Dow breaks down and closes – at the close below 12,800, that would turn what’s a problem market into a much bigger problem.

KANGAS: Well, how do the other technical indicators that you follow stack up right now?

WEINSTEIN: There are mixed but there are a lot of other things to worry about. The Dow Jones transportation average, not doing very well. That doesn’t look good. My proprietary S&P survey which measures the percentage of stocks that are healthy in that universe, only 30 percent of all S&P stocks are technically healthy. This is a very difficult market and you have to treat it with great caution and selectively.

KANGAS: Is this market going to remain highly select and volatile like it’s been?

WEINSTEIN: I think it is, especially with hedge funds becoming a bigger and bigger part of the market, I think we are going to remain in the selective market because even though the market is bearish, hedge funds will still look for the one or two sectors that they can do buying in. So I think it’s a fact of life.

KANGAS: That word “sector.” What sectors do you like?

WEINSTEIN: I am still bullish on technology, which last time I was on the show I liked and I think technology in general looks good. Health care also looks good. I like I lot of gold stocks and other metals, industrials, fertilizer stocks. Those are the good places. Even in good areas Paul, there’s some bad charts.

KANGAS: What do you dislike?

WEINSTEIN: There are some bad stocks. Banks, brokers and retail, those are bad. They’re oversold. In a rally, don’t buy them. Sell the rally.

KANGAS: OK, so it’s too early to get in for the long term.

WEINSTEIN: Absolutely.

KANGAS: Now you touched on gold and you like it. Any further follow- up on that?

WEINSTEIN: Absolutely. I think gold is very bullish and I have a new worry level for gold. I told you last time 600, Now 640. If any point it closes below 640, then gold becomes a problem. What I would think is going to happen if some point gold goes top side and it closes above the 732 level, then I think gold is going to really shine.

KANGAS: OK, now how about bonds? Are they a safe place to be to avoid the volatility of stocks?

WEINSTEIN: I think that it’s a safe place, but it’s not my number one investment area, but it’s moderately OK.

KANGAS: Now short selling, should the individual investor get into that?

WEINSTEIN: I do think so. As I wrote in my book, “Secrets of Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets,” I think everybody should learn how to sell short. Otherwise it’s like driving a car with no reverse. You only have one gear. I think you should learn how to do it, but do it the right way with protective buy stocks. And then when you do it right, the few judicious shorts will make you run your own account like a hedge fund.

KANGAS: But as they say on Wall Street, he who sells what isn’t his’n buys it back or goes to prison. It’s a dangerous proceeding.

WEINSTEIN: Right. You have to learn the proper way to do it.

KANGAS: OK. Any final thoughts? We have about 20 seconds.

WEINSTEIN: I think that this market volatility is more than anything I have seen in my 40-plus years of market tape reading here and I think people have to learn to sell rallies in the bad stocks and use pull backs as a buy (ph) in things that I’m bullish on like some of the technology issues.

KANGAS: Good advice. Stan, as always it’s a real pleasure to have you with us.

KANGAS: El Dow Jones como sabemos, alcanzó un récord apenas por encima del nivel de 14.000 en julio y rápidamente vendió bastante mal. ¿Era eso liquidación dentro de los límites de una corrección normal en un mercado alcista saludable o estamos comenzando a ver el mercado bajista?

Weinstein: yo no quiero que me cuelguen en la semántica porque el mercado de oso de una persona es la pérdida de otra persona. Lo que me interesa mucho acerca de Paul, muy fuerte, es que un máximo importante fue alcanzado en el período comprendido entre mediados de julio y por lo menos las dos terceras partes del mercado que ya está en su propio mercado a la privada. Así, en el mejor es neutral y que ya no estamos en un saludable (inaudible) mercado alcista.

KANGAS: ¿Qué indicadores se advirtió de que el Rally a los nuevos, de todos los tiempos era sospechoso?

Weinstein: Había tantos. KANGAS: La palabra “sector”. ¿Qué sectores le gusta?

Weinstein: Todavía estoy optimista sobre la tecnología, que última vez que estuve en el programa me gustó y creo que la tecnología en la buena apariencia general. De atención de la salud también se ve bien. Me gusta mucho lo de las reservas de oro y otros metales, industriales, las existencias de fertilizantes. Esos son los buenos lugares. KANGAS: ¿Qué no te gusta?

Weinstein: Hay algunas poblaciones de malas. Bancos, corredores y al por menor, los que son malos. Son sobreventa. En un mitin, no los compre. Vender el rally.

KANGAS: OK, así que es demasiado pronto para entrar en el largo plazo.

Weinstein: Absolutamente.

KANGAS: Ahora toca en el oro y que te guste. Más allá de seguimiento al respecto?

Weinstein: Absolutamente. Creo que el oro es muy optimista y tengo un nivel de nueva preocupación para el oro. Te lo dije la última vez 600, ahora 640. Si en algún punto que se cierra por debajo de 640, entonces el oro se convierte en un problema. Lo que yo creo que va a pasar si algún punto de oro va parte de arriba y se cierra encima del nivel de 732, entonces creo que el oro va a brillar realmente.

KANGAS: OK, ahora ¿qué hay de los bonos? ¿Son un lugar seguro para evitar la volatilidad de las acciones?

Weinstein: Creo que es un lugar seguro, pero no es mi principal área de inversión, pero es moderadamente en Aceptar.

    He estado investigando sobre vídeos de Don Stan Weinstein, y lamentablemente este señor es más invisible que un fantasma. Aparte del vídeo que os enseñé del 20 de Noviembre de 2009, supuetamente hay otro vídeo de archivo del 2008, sobre Noviembre también, donde Weinstein fue entrevistado en el mismo programa.

    En él, el entrevistador le pregunta sobre qué ocurrirá (a 14 de Noviembre de 2008) y si ya se ha tocado fondo. En plena crisis bursátil, Weinstein sigue mostrándose bajista (com debía ser). Le recuerda mucho al mercado del 1.972-1.974, donde la crisis se extendió por todo el mundo. Realmente Weinstein acierta notablmente comparándolo con esa crisis que además tenía un mercado de materias primas al alza. Os dejo la versión inglesa y la versión española, aunque la traducción del google es un poco mala, algo se puede entender si no sabeis nada de inglés.

STAN WEINSTEIN, EDITOR & PUBLISHER, “GLOBAL TREND ALERT”: Always my pleasure to be back, Paul.

KANGAS: When you were last with us in September of 2007, too long ago, the Dow was at 13, 400. You said the bull market was no longer healthy and warned if it broke below 12,800 on the Dow, bear would emerge and that was a great call. Congratulations.

WEINSTEIN: Thank you very much.

KANGAS: Now the question is: can you tell us if the market is in the bottoming process and ready for buying?

WEINSTEIN: Process is the right word. It takes time. So I think the process has started, but long-term, we’re still bearish. I don’t think that the bear has breathed its last. Short-term is a different thing. Short-term I think you may have hit a low this past Thursday and I’ll give you two numbers to watch, but this is trading. If the Dow can close above 9800, I think for the first time in a heck of a long time, we’ll get a good short- term rally. If it doesn’t happen, conversely instead you close around 7800, another down leg.

KANGAS: What moving average is the most important one to follow under these conditions?

WEINSTEIN: There are two that I especially focus on. For long-term investing, I think the 200-day moving average is key. But for trading, I think the 50-day moving average is important. So I wouldn’t use one. I’d combine the two together.

KANGAS: What stock groups do you think will lead the market higher when that time comes?

WEINSTEIN: We should only get there. I think that two groups – they’re not bullish yet, but two groups which I think have seen their bear market lows, irrespective if the Dow goes there, are the airlines and the banks which you know I was bearish on before. Some select regional banks and some airlines and some select healthcare stocks look like they’re starting to base, but they’re not yet officially bullish. They’re basing.

KANGAS: Back in September of last year, you didn’t like the retailers, either and look what’s happened then. There must be a time to buy.

WEINSTEIN: Well again, very, very split groups. Some retailers selectively are bullish, but there’s a lot of retailers – when the charts are doing their thing, you’ve got to look chart by chart.

KANGAS: What else would you stay away from in the way of stock groups?

WEINSTEIN: There is no longer such a matter of groups because the groups (INAUDIBLE) like the oils, the fertilizers, they’ve destroyed them. But there are a lot of individual stocks that aren’t too late to sell and here’s where the charts do their think. If you have a stock that’s close to its 200-day moving average starting to break down, I think that’s still saleable, but (INAUDIBLE).

KANGAS: As you know, the G-20 leaders are meeting in Washington this weekend. What would you like to come out of that summit on the financial crisis?

WEINSTEIN: First of all, I’m a cynic, so I don’t expect too much. But secondly, I’m a technician so I care less about what they say and it’s how the market reacts to the news more than the news itself that will impress me.

KANGAS: Are there any foreign markets you do like?

WEINSTEIN: This is what’s really scary. There are no foreign markets — I go through all the charts that are bullish and they (INAUDIBLE) . We’re in a worldwide bear market and those are the most dangerous, reminds me very much of what we went through in 1973 and ’74, which was a devastating bear market.

KANGAS: What about gold and gold stocks?

WEINSTEIN: Both of them have been bullish. But the gold stocks topped out last March. Gold bullion topped out this past July and turned bearish in August. There is really not a lot of places to hide. They’re both in bear markets now, too.

KANGAS: Can you hide in bonds?

WEINSTEIN: Bonds are at least neutral which I think will win here and neutral, just stick with high-quality government bonds and I say, short- term maturities, five years or less.

KANGAS: Very interesting. Stan, we have about 30 seconds left. Any final thoughts for our viewers?

WEINSTEIN: I would say that they should learn from this terrible bear market that we’re going through, that a simple buy and hold strategy is very dangerous to your investing health. I think you’ve got to keep looking at charts and when they turn negative, you can’t fall in love with the stock. There is a time to buy and a time to sell. If they say sell, you got to sell.

KANGAS: So it is good for the brokers, too?

WEINSTEIN: And it’s good for you, too.

KANGAS: Very good. Stan, it is great to see you and get your insight. Thanks very much.

KANGAS: Cuando usted fue pasado con nosotros en septiembre de 2007, hace mucho tiempo, el Dow Jones estaba en 13, 400. KANGAS: ¿Cuál es el promedio móvil más importante a seguir en estas condiciones?

Weinstein: Hay dos que se concentrará sobre todo. Para inversiones a largo plazo, creo que el de 200 días de media móvil es la clave. Sin embargo, para el comercio, creo que el 50-días de media móvil es importante. Así que no se dispone de una. Me combinar los dos juntos.

KANGAS: ¿Qué grupos de acciones crees que va a liderar el mercado de mayor cuando llegue ese momento?Weinstein: Solo debemos llegar. Creo que hay dos grupos – que no son optimistas, sin embargo, sólo dos grupos que creo que han visto sus mínimos de mercado a la baja, independientemente si el Dow Jones va allí, son las compañías aéreas y los bancos que usted sabe que yo era bajista de antes. KANGAS: Como ustedes saben, el G-20 son los líderes reunidos en Washington este fin de semana. ¿Qué te gustaría salir de esta cumbre sobre la crisis financiera?

Weinstein: En primer lugar, soy un cínico, así que no esperes demasiado. Pero en segundo lugar, yo soy un técnico, así que importa menos lo que dicen y así es como el mercado reacciona a la noticia más que la noticia sí que me impresiona.

KANGAS: ¿Hay mercados extranjeros te gusta?

Weinstein: Esto es lo que realmente da miedo. No hay mercados extranjeros – Voy por todas las cartas que se muestran optimistas y (inaudible). Weinstein: dos de ellos han sido alcista. Sin embargo, las existencias del oro superaron a cabo en marzo pasado. El oro superó a cabo este pasado mes de julio y se muestran renuentes en agosto. No hay realmente una gran cantidad de lugares para esconderse. Ambos están en mercados bajistas ahora, también.

KANGAS: ¿Se puede ocultar en bonos?

Weinstein: Los bonos son al menos neutrales que creo que va a ganar aquí y neutral, sólo quedarse con los bonos de alto gobierno de calidad y yo digo, vencimientos a corto plazo, cinco años o menos.

KANGAS: Muy interesante. Stan, tenemos unos 30 segundos. Cualquier idea final para nuestros lectores?

Weinstein: Yo diría que deberíamos aprender de este mercado bajista terrible que estamos pasando, que una simple compra y la estrategia de retención es muy peligroso para la salud de invertir. Creo que tienes que seguir buscando en las cartas y cuando se tornan negativos, no se puede enamorar de la población. Hay un tiempo para comprar y un tiempo para vender. Si ellos dicen que vender, tienes que vender

.KANGAS: Así que es bueno para los corredores, también?

Weinstein: Y es bueno para usted, también.

KANGAS: Muy bien. Stan, es mucho verle y obtener su comprensión. Muchas gracias.
